In the heart of the Renaissance town of Amboise and its charming paved streets lies the Royal Chateau of Amboise. Charles VIII became the architect of this fine castle when he began to transform the original medieval dwelling into a gothic chateau. After his early death his work was continued by Louis XII – who was also obliged to marry his widow, Ann of Brittany. François 1st, one of the great kings of the Renaissance period, spent a large part of his childhood there under the protection of his uncle Louis XII and his wife. The great Italian genius, Leonardo da Vinci lies in the castle’s chapel just a few steps away from his last abode: Le Clos Lucé. From the terraces and balconies of the Royal Chateau of Amboise you have beautiful views of the Loire river and the town.
Access
There are public carparks in the town and along the river banks.
