Le château de Langeais is one of the lesser known castles of the Loire Valley but it is well worth a visit. It is a castle of contrasts – on the outside it has all the attributes of a medieval fortress with its fortified walls and a draw bridge but once you step into the courtyard you are confronted with a more welcoming aspect. The interior of the castle is in late medieval style, very different from the Renaissance influence of most of the castles of the Loire, but with all the comforts to be expected in the home of a king. The original building was demolished by Charles VII – except for the keep which can still be seen in the castle grounds and is over 1000 years old! Rebuilt in 1465 by Louis XI, one of the most notable historic events that occurred there was the marriage of Charles VIII and Anne de Bretagne.
