The Touraine area boasts many castles situated on the Cher and the Loire rivers.
On the banks of the river Cher sits the Château de Chenonceau, also known as “The Ladies Chateau” and one of the most famous chateaux of the Loire Valley. It is easily recognisable by its elegant arches which stretch out across the river Cher. As you walk along the galleries you have a breathtaking view across the Cher and you get the impression of walking on the water. Wonderful flower arrangements decorate each room, using the flowers from the splendid gardens which are well worth a visit.
The pretty Renaissance town of Amboise with its narrow, paved streets and renowned Sunday morning market is situated on the banks on the Loire. In the heart of the town is the Royal Château of Amboise. François 1st, one of the great kings of the Renaissance period, spent part of his childhood there under the protection of his uncle Louis XII and his wife Anne of Brittany. There are wonderful views across the Loire from the roof terraces of the chateau.
Le Château of Clos Lucé is also situated in the town of Amboise, at about one hundred metres from the château Royal. The château was given to Leonardo da Vinci by Francois 1st in recognition of his genius. This is where he spent the last three years of his life working on numerous projects. In the château and its grounds you will be able to see and interact with full-size reproductions of his inventions. The Clos Lucé is dedicated to its former owner and offers a unique experience in the chateaux of the Loire.
